Abstract

Gastrointestinal parasitoses have become a significant challenge in the breeding and development of small ruminants, primarily due to the incorrect use of anthelmintics coupled with inappropriate management practices, leading to the emergence of parasitic resistance. Consequently, plant species can be employed for alternative control, with emphasis on the quince tree (Croton blanchetianus), which has proven bioactivity and efficacy against microorganisms, ectoparasites, and endoparasites in sheep. In light of this, the objective of this research was to evaluate the in vitro ovicidal effect of the essential oil from the leaves of C. blanchetianus in the control of gastrointestinal endoparasites in sheep. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus for 2 hours and 30 minutes at a temperature of 100 ºC. Fecal samples were collected directly from the rectal ampoule, with animal selection based on the completion of a 90-day residual period. Subsequently, egg counts per gram of feces exceeding 2000 eggs were identified, recovered, and the hatching test was initiated. The essential oil at concentrations of 8%, 12%, and 16% exhibited hatching inhibition of 79%, 81%, and 82%, respectively. Therefore, the oil obtained from the leaves of C. blanchetianus demonstrated inhibition of egg hatching, making it a viable alternative against parasites affecting sheep.
