This study aims to analyze evidence of the theoretical field of Special Education in Brazil. The research was developed in a qualitative, exploratory approach, with the use of document analysis. The theoretical background was based on Pierre Bourdieu's concepts. The theoretical field evidence was collected from three sources: 1) National Pedagogical Bibliography; 2) Productions of Education Journals that circulated in Brazil, from 1893 to 1967; and 3) Productions of the Brazilian Journal of Pedagogical Studies (Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos – RBEP), from 1940 to 1960. The results point to a multiple and multidimensional theoretical field, characterized by the inexistence of policies concerned with the participation of people with disabilities, and productions that highlighted prejudice, inequality and exclusion.
