This text outlines some issues, challenges and problems related to the teaching of Communication Theory in undergraduate courses in the area. The initial concern is the observation of a certain consensus among teachers and students regarding the problems related to the teaching of theoretical disciplines, whether in relation to their specificity, positioning in the course and ability to promote critical engagement of the student body. Based on this, based on bibliographical research and formal and informal dialogical practices in the teaching experience, this text highlights three dimensions of this scenario: (1) the relations between the theory/practice division and a conception of university and society; (2) the problems of defining what constitutes a “theoretical” discipline and (3) its place in the disciplinary matrices of the courses. These elements are worked on from the point of view of classroom practice in the teaching of theoretical disciplines in Communication courses.
